Besides doing dry cleaning we at Prestige Laundry is one of the few laundry in Singapore that washes with a 100% wet cleaning technology. There is no need for dry cleaning since we can confidently handle all kinds of delicate materials including wool, silk, and leather. Items washed using wet cleaning methods are proven to be cleaner, fresher, and without the usual misconception of shrinkage and distortion.

We actively promote and educate the public to switch to wet cleaning, a safer method of processing delicate items. Items wet cleaned are safe for the consumer since only water and bio-degradable detergents are used during the process.

The detergents we use for both the laundry and wet cleaning process are from Seitz, a leader in the development of the wet cleaning process. The precise amount of detergents are injected into the washer extractor using pumps, thus ensuring a highly accurate wash formulation which is especially crucial to the success of wet cleaning.

The growing concerns for individual health and environmental damage caused by dry cleaning process have prompted the development of alternative cleaning methods. Amongst these methods is a process called wet cleaning. Water, an age-old cleaner is used and with the recently developed technology, cleaner can now safely used water to clean garments that were once thought to be only possible in a dry cleaning machine. The twist to this breakthrough is the development of new generation soaps, computerised washing machine capable of precisely controlling the mechanical action and highly sophisticated tumbler dryer able to control the desired humidity level. This proven technology is capable of processing all type of garments and articles.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wetcleaning

What is wet cleaning?
Professional wet cleaning is an alternative to dry cleaning. It is a solvent-free method to clean garments. It uses specialised machines to safely clean in water garments that were previously cleaned in chemical solvents.

What is the difference between dry cleaning and wet cleaning?
Dry cleaning uses a petroleum-based solvent called Perchorethylene (Perc) or Hydrocarbon. These solvents are good for removing grease and oil-based stains but poor in removing water-based stains. In a dry cleaning machine, the solvent has to be recycled after cleaning the garment and used for the next load of garments. These solvents, by the regulation, cannot be discharged into the sewer as it is not environmentally friendly. The only way to get your garments really cleaned is to do pre-treatment to remove water-based stains and wash them in the dry cleaning machine with clean solvent. Unfortunately, clean solvent means frequent distillation of the soiled solvent and this is an expensive process since huge amount of energy is needed to boil and evaporate the solvent and refrigerated to condense the gaseous solvent back to liquid.

On a personal health, Perc vapors can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat or skin. Long-term exposure causes cancer in laboratory animals and is considered a possible human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While Singapore laws now require that Perc be carefully controlled, the Ministry of Manpower had already made it mandatory for dry cleaner operators using Perc machine to undergo health checks once every six months.

Wet cleaning, on the other hand, uses water and non-toxic soaps, quite similar to the normal laundering process except that the wash formulation is special. It can safely clean virtually anything, from silk dresses to wool suits. It is definitely the best alternative to dry cleaning and a healthier choice for consumer since only water and bio-degradable soaps are used and completely discharged into sewer after washing. Rinsing is done using only water so the garments after extraction will be cleaner and fresher.

Since a washing machine is used for wet cleaning, can I clean my delicate garment at home?
No, your household machine is not designed for wet cleaning. The washing machines used for wet cleaning must be equipped with a fully programmable microprocessor control and also a frequency inverted controlled motor. Liquid soaps are injected into the machine via soap pumps precisely controlled by the washer microprocessor control. All these features are not found on your household machine so it is thus not possible to do wet cleaning at home.

My garment has a care label that says dry clean only, can I wet clean the garment?
Yes, virtually all garments that are to be dry clean can be processed using wet cleaning method. In fact you will see more and more garments with wet cleaning care label as shown below:

What are the benefits of wet cleaning?
Garments wet cleaned are subject to a thorough wash cycle involving at least two washes with two different types of detergents, and depending on the type of garments, two or three rinses. You can be certain that garments wet cleaned are totally clean and fresh. Due to the special formulation, garments are protected against loss of colour and dimension distortion. A special detergent is dosed during the last rinse to enhance the colour and bring up the optical brightness of the garment. Thus garment wet cleaned are comparable if not better than those dry cleaned, and are free of toxic chemical.

Certain garments such as evening and wedding gowns that contains sequins, plastic ornaments or fabric that has PVC contents cannot be dry cleaned. These plastic contents will melt away in the dry cleaning process. However these type of garments are entirely safe to be wet cleaned

Water based stains such as sweat, urine, blood, food etc are easily removed in a wet cleaning process. These water based stains would not dissolve in the dry cleaning solvent and have to be pre-spotted before washing. Also it does not have the usual "Yellowing" effect found on dry clean articles.

The soaps we use for wet cleaning have mild pH between 5.2 to 5.5. Unlike the usual high alkaline detergents used in normal laundering, they will not cause irritation to our skin even if they are not completely removed.

Does the wet cleaning process affect the environment?
Wetcleaning does not use hazardous chemicals, thus is not harmful to the air, water, and soil. The process is safe and thus of no concern to our environmental authority.

Is the cost of wet cleaning higher than dry cleaning?
Yes, the cost of wetcleaning is indeed higher than dry cleaning due to the different type of soaps and the special nature of the soap. However we believe we should not pass on the cost to our customers. As such, all our listed prices for wet cleaning are comparable to dry cleaning.

Are there any limitations on wet cleaning process?
Yes, Acetate, Triacetate and Viscose fabrics can have loss of dimensions after wet
cleaning. However these temporarily loss of dimensions can be corrected with
proven techniques and a longer finishing process.
