About Us
Attitude Dance Studio (ADS) had its humble beginnings in Singapore in 1998. The studio is owned by Artistic Director, Güpson Pierre.
Güpson Pierre is very much responsible for the style of Salsa in Singapore as it is today. He pioneered the Cross Body Style Salsa danced on the count of “1” at a time when most salsa dancers were dancing the Cuban style. Today, almost all Salsa dancers and teachers in Singapore dance and teach this popular dance style introduced by Güpson Pierre.
The Salsa community has since grown, with ADS a primary contributor to many of its more proficient dancers. In fact, most Salsa teachers in Singapore have taken courses from Attitude Dance Studio; or, they were students from the school itself. From just 20 students in 1998, ADS now has over 3000 students; 6 instructors and 1 Artistic Director; with branches in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Melbourne, Australia. Specialising in Salsa, ADS offers other exciting classes such as Cardio Salsa, Exotic Dance, Afro-Caribbean Dance Movements and more.
Focusing _disibledevent="/Learning-Education/Performing-Arts-Courses/ad-60446/">dance technique, constant updating of its teaching syllabus with worldwide standards, and drawing on its strength in teaching solid mastery of the fundamentals, ADS is the foremost dance studio in Salsa and Exotic Dance (ADS was the first dance studio in Singapore to offer this new and exciting dance).
Our Courses
Salsa is a Latin street dance that originated in the Afro-Caribbean and became popularized in the United States when emigrants from Cuba and Puerto Rico fled to Spanish Harlem, New York due to social and economic pressures. The dance is danced by 2 people (a leader and a follower) to a salsa beat with an 8-beat measure. At Attitude Dance Studio (ADS), we teach Cross Body Style salsa (which literally means the leader sends the lady across his body when executing fancy dance patterns).
- Street Cha-Cha & Merengue
Street Cha-Cha is a great introduction for ‘On 1’ Salsa dancers who would eventually like to learn how to dance New York Style Salsa.
As mambo music and dance developed, musicians experimented with new beats and tempos. Triple mambo was created by tripling one of the beats very rapidly. When you dance to this fast rhythm, the scraping and shuffling of the feet produces a sound that goes a bit like "cha cha cha". The tripling in the rhythm translates to a rapid weight shift from left to right to left to right , and vice-versa. As such, a lot of the so-called ‘On2 Groove’ and ‘On2 Body Movement’ are almost naturally produced.
The emphasis in this course is again on: musicality; body movement; and, lead & follow techniques rather than patterns.
Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic and to some extent, Haiti, its neighbouring land. There is a lot of variety in Merengue music. Tempos vary a great deal and the Dominicans enjoy a sharp quickening of pace towards the later part of the dance. There is a lot of hip action and rhythmic gyrating of the pelvis when one does this dance. Merengue dancing takes up very little space, and is ideally suited to small crowded dance floors.
Street Cha-cha & Merengue may be taught as a combined course or as separate dance courses.
