A diamond with a longer lower girdle facet shines better than the normal hearts & arrows cut diamond with shorter lower girdle facets. Something that is worth doing some research about!
We advise our customers to set their diamond or gemstone in a 6-prong setting if the material used is 18k white gold (Mohs' Hardness of 2.5 - 3). This is because gold is relatively soft and the prong might break if given enough stress. If the gemstone is set in a 4-prong setting and the prong breaks, the gemstone may drop out.
Unless the material used is platinum (Mohs' Hardness of 4 - 4.5), which is harder than gold, otherwise we will strongly recommend 6-prong setting.
The above is a 1ct diamond set in a 6-prong 18k white gold. For more
