Shopping in Singapore is very much like a sport. One needs to be mentally prepared mentally (for the kiasu aunties, irritable yuppies, and incredible customer service), and have the right gears and outfit to participate. Your shopping trip can easily turn into troublesome and frustrating with the wrong attire, so here’s some useful tips and ideas for the best hassle-free and fashionable outfits.
The Arty Dress
+ A comfortable shift dress is perfect for daywear
+ If you foresee your shopping hours extend late into the night, pick a fancier dress instead of the usual LBD to remain looking as fab for the night out.
+ The ingenious one-piece mini dress is also a massive time-saver as you continuously take off and put on throughout the day to try on clothes
+ Headgears like the simple hair band is also a great solution to messed up hairdos from all the change of clothes.
- Heels are obviously a bad choice for a nine-hour shopping trip, so unless you want to sacrifice your ankles, we suggest you go for the simple ballerina flats.
- Your designer handbag may assure your status, but are you sure you would want to rough it out at overcrowded sales? |

It’s Too Hot For Sleeves
+ Expect nothing but sun, sun, and more sun along the streets, so it’s a Yay! for the tank tops.
+ Throw in a quirky tote bag to complete your outfit. It also hangs comfortably on your shoulders, giving both your hands access to browse the shopping
+ The bigger the tote the better! We’re all in for the reduce-plastic-bags movement, so throw all your buys into your tote.
- Hipster jeans do beckon some unsightly butt cracks as you bend down to look at some shoes!
- Remember to choose patterned or dark-coloured tank tops only. No one wants to be caught with sweat patches under your arms when you raise your hand to pick something off the shelves!

The Easy Breezy Boho
+ Mid length skirt allows you to walk and move around with ease compared to tight fitting jeans and skirts.
+ Knee-length skirts are also great for a quick fitting of bottoms when the changing room queue is way too long
+ Another quick fitting solution would be with spaghetti tops, over which you can easily try on other tops and jackets.
- Full-length skirts can be a hassle in crowds, especially when others tend to step on your skirt among the hustle and bustle.
- A hat to shield your eyes from the sun may mean you need not bring an umbrella, but you may also get tired of removing and putting it on repeatedly in the changing room. Same goes for scarves.
- Accessories tend to go missing after constant changing of tops, so you may want to avoid dangly earrings, hair clips with sharp edges, and expensive accessories of course!

Sleek And Sharp |
+ Don’t you just love wedges? They’re dressy, comfortable, and easy to slip on and off. Perfect for looking fashionable during marathon bargain hunting!
+ A bag with easy-to-access compartments is great of shopping. Especially when you need to keep your belongings safe with zips, and reach in for your wallet constantly.
- Watch out for those plunging necklines. You tend to bend low and reach far while shopping, so pick tops which flatter your cleavage classily, not make those lovelies spill out!
- Mini skirts do look cute and are perfect for the humid weather here, but take extra precaution not to flash other while you sit and try on shoes and reach down to put them back on the rack.
- Singaporeans all brisk walk even while we “stroll leisurely”, so imagine yourself struggling to walk fast in your butt-hugging pencil skirt as you get swept away by the crowd.
- Strappy footwear is difficult to take off, so it’s not the best choice for shoe sales. Moreover, are you really willing to expose your toes and pedicure to the ruthless stomping of others?

The Alternative Chick
+ Stretchable T-shirts are foolproof. Put on those with funky prints to make your outfit look less shabby.
+ Shoes, which require no hands to put on and remove, are a must! It protects your delicate feet from all the high-heeled ladies who stomp around.
+ A long umbrella may be a hassle to carry around, but it does help to jab those people who walk too slow in front of you, or as a tool to get to the front of the crowd |
 |
- A blouse which required you to unbutton all seven of its buttons? Too much hassle for anyone who wants to try on as many tops as possible.
- Sneakers are already hard to put on. High cut sneakers? Highly unadvisable. Not forgetting the stares you will get when you remove them to try on shoes after a long day of shopping around town.
- Corsets as outerwear, should be avoided at all costs. We’re no Marie Antoinette’s who have a dressing crew to put on her outfit.
- Skinny jeans which requires you to lie flat on your back with your legs up to put on? Unless the fitting rooms have beds, go for those which you only need to suck your stomach in to zip up.
- Brooches and necklaces may also leave an ugly scratch on your face if you pull over your shirt in a hurry.
