“OKAY Terry, you know, and can very obviously see, what my physical problems are, I’m way, way overweight for my height. My Body Mass Index has gone through the roof! I easily get breathless and wheeze and pant worse that a dog after just a few steps up the stairs. The chair creaks embarrassingly loud every time I sit in it or get up from it.
But I love food. I am the “Champion of the Foodies”, at least that’s what my colleagues and friends call me! They keep passing any unfinished portions of food to me to polish off. “City Hall” they nicknamed me after the “sanitary engineers” who clean up the wastes of the City,” Daniel grumbled.
Terry affirmed, “Yes, I can see where your problem is. Obviously, you are not satisfied where you are.” He then grilled Daniel, “Do you want a change? And, if so, what have you done so far to make that change?”
“I know that I am in trouble that I am seriously in need of a major weight loss, big time! BUT, I can’t seem to lose weight, no matter what I do! I’ve tried dieting, I’ve tried meal replacements, I’ve tried working out at the gym (by the way, there are some really nice folks there, ahem) including personal training programs, I’ve tried special fat-burning medications or formulations, etc., etc., etc.,” Daniel lamented with a theatrical flourish.
“But none seemed to work at all! Well, to be fair, some of the methods did actually help me lose weight, but soon after the fun and novelty of each new method has worn off, I just ate my weight back up again, sometimes more; you know, the “New Toilet” syndrome? It is like I cannot stick to any of the weight loss methods for long enough to get any permanent results,” he heaved a big sigh, resigning himself to his seemingly never-ending story.
Then suddenly Daniel perked up excitedly “However, I do have a new personal motto at work, ‘Do, or do not. There is no ‘try’!’ as the Jedi Master, Yoda, wisely taught. So, Terry, I am now ready to DO it!”
Terry chuckled at Daniel’s newfound enthusiasm. “Daniel, that’s wonderful that you are so charged up and ready to go!” “But now, I must ask for your frank answer to this question. On your own, just how long do you honestly think you will carry on using whatever technique that I will be teaching you at the MindFrame Seminar to achieve your weight loss goals?” asked Terry looking intently at Daniel, who involuntarily squirmed a bit.
“Well, er, based on my past experiences, a few weeks, probably a month at most,” Daniel conceded, although he was so, so tempted to exaggerate just a little bit more, but he dared not challenge Terry’s stare.
Terry gave him a firm loud pat on the back, “Congratulations! You have just performed the very important groundwork in order to maximise your benefit from the MindFrame Seminar. That is, you must first identify the negative pattern that is preventing you from achieving your long-term goals. In your case, it is your lack of staying power and perseverance to stick with whatever weight loss methods you were attempting, and to stop going back to your negative habit of overeating!
By repeatedly saying “I’ve tried this, I’ve tried that” especially the word “tried”, you have been unconsciously programming your mind to help you fail by implanting a negative excuse for quitting (“after all, I’m only trying this out”) even when the good results are showing!”
“So, to correct your course in life we need to reverse the negative pattern! Come, I’ll show you how . . .”
