WE received a press release the other day from Canon, which is rolling out two new compact photo printers this weekend that, if the company’s publicists are to be believed, could be the next big thing in home accessories. We sure would like to get one as a Christmas gift.

“Finished in cool cappuccino and elegant white,” the press release wrote, “the SELPHY ES2 and ES20 are compact enough to fit on a coffee table or bookshelf and are a must-have addition to any modern living room.”

These printers are also protected from fingerprints, dust and scratches — so we guess it’ll always look new beside the withering fortune plant on the side table.

It’s also small enough to bring around with you, much like you would a poodle or an iPod.

“Fun photo printing has never been more convenient,” says Andrew Koh, director and general manager of Consumer Imaging and Information Division of Canon Singapore.

“The new SELPHY ES2 and ES20 are the perfect companions to take along to parties or on vacations. Both printers will provide hours of entertainment with a range of in-built creative functions that turn the photo-lab quality prints into priceless mementos,” he adds.

The new SELPHY printers also go beyond simple photo printing, giving users a choice of 16 thematic frames — from birthdays to Christmas — that add fun and flair to postcard prints.

For even more creative print options, take advantage of clip art to spice up photos or experiment with individualised prints with six calendar templates, ID Photo Print, decorative frames as well as Speech Bubbles.

A special Black and White integrated ink and paper cartridge allows users to experiment with black and white photo prints for a classic look.

An integrated carry handle means that both printers are easy to take anywhere, and wireless printing from mobile phones is also available with the help of an optional Bluetooth adaptor. The SELPHY ES2 also has an optional battery pack, offering total portable printing power.
