IF YOU’RE looking for a bookstore along Orchard Road, only two names come to mind: Borders and Kinokuniya. Too predictable? The quintessentially quirky shoppers can now forget about those two because there’s woodwould.
“We wanted it to feel like your grandmother’s house, where you can find all sorts of hidden treasures,” woodwould owner Grace Ng quips. “You know how most bookstores are pretty standard and boring? We tried as much to stay away from that idea.”
Most of woodwould’s products are imported from USA, Japan, and Korea, so you can feast your eyes on unique journals, planners, graphic books and cards, and gift items which previously could only be bought online.
When it comes to indie brands and items, most Internet-savvy Singaporeans would go to online shops and pay costly shipments. Now that Wood Would has brought in unusual stationery for all to see, touch, and feel, shoppers can now buy them over the counter easily.

Quirky, fun, childish, and eccentric stationery can be found here |
Those who live for peculiar finds and gift items that none of your friends own will end up spending hours in the small store. Littered fancily with things vintage, romantic, childish, and girlie, it is almost as fascinating as Narnia’s cupboard.
Grace handpicked almost all of woodwould’s products and gift items, and she admits that she has a personal obsession with quirky things. “Having lived abroad, I find that there are many eccentric items which aren’t available in Singapore, so that’s how woodwould started out. I wanted to share this passion with the people here.”
In the future, woodwould also aims to strike a balance between imported stock and its own line of products in the future. The first of woodwould’s original items is a wonderful weekly planner designed with Grace’s doodles. “A lot of time and hard work has been put into this one, but we are still trying our best to fully launch our own line.”
woodwould is one of the pioneering shops that moved in after Cathay’s renovation. Other concept and lifestyle shops like CLIQUE, forest + trees, Three3Three, and Déjà Vu Vintage followed soon after.
Visit woodwould at 2 Handy Road, The Cathay #03-03 during weekdays from 3pm to 10pm, or visit them at woodwould.net to find out more.
