Monologues about — and starring — Filipino maids show their dreams,

“IT WAS really tough writing the script because there were so many stories that I wanted to tell, each of them very unique,” says stage and TV actor Jay Españo, who this weekend is mounting The Tales Of Three Marias, a play about Filipino domestic helpers here in Singapore, which he wrote and is directing.

It’s a gala premiere, and he hopes to attract international arts event organisers as well as sponsors to help him stage it in Singapore next year.

It was originally part of his final year’s requirement at Lasalle College of the Arts, where he’s received a Musical Theatre degree with honors.

The actor, who first arrived in Singapore 2001 for the production of Chang And Eng, The Musical, says it was while conducting an acting workshop for the local Filipino community here that he stumbled upon the idea for his non-traditional play, which casts real-life domestic helpers.

They are not “acting” so much as they are “reciting” monologues. He says The Tales Of Three Marias is about “ the dreams, frustrations and happiness of maids here. The play is in Filipino, but with English subtitles.”

To come up with material, he spoke to over 50 people. “I wouldn't really call it an interview, maybe more like a chat session. They just opened up and I didn't really have a hard time drawing insights from them,” he says.

“My original actors were from the acting workshop that I conducted, but a lot of things happened along the way. For example, one of them had to fly to Denmark suddenly because she was able to find a new employer. So I had to find a replacement — and that was quite a strenuous task,” he adds.

As is the fashion in predominantly Catholic Philippines, the characters in The Tales Of Three Marias are all named Maria, after the Virgin Mary.

Maria Soledad Padua, played by Doreen Dangca, is an abused maid who ends up killing her employer out of revenge.

Maria Dolores Dimarucut, played by Nenite de Torres, is a veteran maid in Singapore and a single mother who is suffering an identity crisis: Is she still Filipino or an adopted Singaporean?

Finally there is Maria Corazon Parungao, played by Rose Sarador, a perky young lady whose real dream is to migrate to America.

“I wanted them to be themselves. I didn’t want them to act,” explains Españo, who has performed in several Singapore theatre productions like Mardi Gras, Snow Queen, as well as appeared in television shows.

“It was really amazing just to hear them talk about their lives. There were times they cried, but most of the time we laughed really heartily. That's what's fascinating about Filipinos, we can always laugh at ourselves and find ways to overcome adversity,” he says.
