As is the fashion in predominantly Catholic Philippines, the characters in The Tales Of Three Marias are all named Maria, after the Virgin Mary.
Maria Soledad Padua, played by Doreen Dangca, is an abused maid who ends up killing her employer out of revenge.
Maria Dolores Dimarucut, played by Nenite de Torres, is a veteran maid in Singapore and a single mother who is suffering an identity crisis: Is she still Filipino or an adopted Singaporean?
Finally there is Maria Corazon Parungao, played by Rose Sarador, a perky young lady whose real dream is to migrate to America.
“I wanted them to be themselves. I didn’t want them to act,” explains Españo, who has performed in several Singapore
theatre productions like
Mardi Gras, Snow Queen, as well as appeared in television shows.
