SALIMAH Ishak, a client of the Society of Physically Disabled, was first diagnosed with her condition when she lost sensation in her limbs when she was 14. Since then, she has managed to regain some movement. In 2000, she joined SPD as a trainee in the Sheltered Workshop and began therapy twice a week at the SPD Rehabilitation Centre. She also received IT training.
Today, Salimah is a full-fledged web and flash animation designer, with clients like Hill and Knowlton, Tat Lee Holdings and Allianz Insurance Company.
Three of her digital artworks are being featured in BEIJING 101 Hair Consultants’s Christmas fundraising project, where people are asked to vote for their favourite digital artwork on www.beijing101hair.com/charity. BEIJING 101 contributes $1 to SPD for every unique vote that the winning artwork gathers from 1 October to 15 November.
Salimah’s works are based on the theme “family”. Blending bold colours and lines, they show how close kinship and family ties are important values in our competitive society; a notion which is in line with the sharing and giving spirit this holiday season.
“Giving to charity online is a simple and fuss-free way of spreading festive cheer this season. It only takes a few minutes of your time and costs practically nothing to vote.” reveals BEIJING 101 spokesperson Serene Wong.

“We are proud to be working with SPD as a beneficiary for this project as it has been enjoying a good reputation since its inception. SPD is also a progressive establishment; it is abreast of the latest developments in training and rehabilitating the disabled to better equip them for daily tasks and challenges.”
Another SPD client who would be one of the beneficiaries of this project is Mr Tan Lye Huat, who has been attending therapies twice a week at the SPD Rehabilitation Centre since July 2007.
This charity drive would assist SPD in its 75% subsidy of his therapy fees. Mr Tan has been suffering from transverse fracture of the left patellar since a fall at his work place and is now unable to perform his role as sole breadwinner of his family.
“Donations from this online charity drive will help contribute to the advancement of the training programmes and facilities at our rehabilitation centre as well as provide subsidies to those who are unable to pay for the rehabilitation services that they receive. Those who are disabled like Salimah and Mr Tan will have more opportunities to be independent in their daily activities and achieve their maximum potential,” says Helen Tay, SPD’s Manager for Fundraising.
