LOCATED amidst schools and residential districts in Bukit Timah, Melvados is often heard of, but not easily found. You can hardly notice this restaurant even if you drive past it, as the building hides behind overgrown roadside flora. “We get lunch and dinner crowds, but it’s the hours in-between which get a little too quiet,” says owner Richard Ng.

Although its location is a bit out of the way, I liked the fact that it’s hidden from the crowd. It provides me, and others who seek refuge from congested fast food restaurants, a tranquil eating experience.

Restaurant interior decor

On the outside, Melvados doesn’t look very appealing, but its cozy interior makes up for that with basic furnishings and hand-painted murals.

Melvados opened a year ago, with a menu mostly limited to their specialty: brownies. “As the demand got higher, customers requested more dishes to be available as well,” shares Richard. Not just a brownie bakery anymore, Melvados now serves Italian spaghetti, pizza, lasagna, and sandwich added to the menu.

I picked the most “interesting-sounding” one: Baked Dory Fish with Garlic Croutons.

Baked Dory Fish

The dish appears as interesting as its name, so I wasted no time observing carefully what was laid out in front of me, and stuffed half of one crouton into my mouth right away. I was very pleased that the crouton wasn’t rock-hard and rubbery like most garlic bread slices.

Next in line was the baked fish. The slices were covered with breadcrumbs (like how you would prepare the fish fillets before deep frying it), which break away and powder your entire mouth when you chew on it. The fish meat lacks the distinctive fishy taste present in most grilled servings, and that is a plus plus point.

All the while I was gobbling up my main course, I couldn’t help thinking about my heavenly dessert that was to come. I always go for the most chocolate-y and sinful one among the list, and at Melvados, that was their Sizzling Brownie Sensations. The menu describes it as “rich chocolate brownie served with triple chocolate ice cream" and that it is simply not to be missed.

Chocolate brownie

The brownie arrived looking very cute and tasty on a frying pan, topped with white and dark Hershey chocolate bits. My friendly waiter then proceeded to place the scoop of ice cream onto the hot plate, resulting in a sizzle and a small wisp of smoke.

I was pretty upset that they chose to place the beautiful ice cream on the hot plate instead of on top of the brownie itself (a la mode style). I can surely do without the elaborate sizzling presentation for ice cream, which doesn’t melt start in seconds.

So after sacrificing a quarter of my precious scoop of chocolate ice cream to take a few appetising pictures of the dessert, I scooped it up onto its rightful place: atop the warm brownie.

The chocolate brownie was enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. It tasted warm and spongy and sweet (with the help of its chocolate toppings). With the ice cream, the contrasting temperatures merged wonderfully. Bliss.

Museli cookies

I also bought a packet of their Muesli cookies. They have an assortment of about seven types, all made in-house and attractively packaged. I was a little doubtful about my packet of cookies (I only bought it with the intention of sharing it with my colleagues, really!) because I’m not a fan of hard cookies. I like mine soft and gooey like Subway’s.

There’s so much packed into this cookie that you can hardly taste the biscuit. The walnuts, raisins, and other unidentifiable grains make it soft to chew on, so it’s another thumbs up from me.

Melvados’ peak hours are from 12pm to 2pm, and 6pm to 8pm. So avoid these hours if you want to dodge the expats, students, and nearby residents. Parking spots near Melvados are hard to find, so take a bus (the nearest bus stop is only 50m away).
