EVER heard of sushi cakes? Neither have we, until we stumbled onto this photo (above) from a blog. Apparently, the bride and groom were known to love sushi so much that their friends decided to bake them this cake made with avocado, edamame, wasabi, raw salmon, tuna and roe. And topped with wasabi icing and drizzled in soy sauce!
We were intrigued enough to start looking for sushi cakemakers in Singapore, but alas, we found none. But we did spy an advertisement in 88DB.com promoting the culinary courses of California-Asia Sushi Academy, which teaches its students fun ways of preparing Japanese food.
While the academy does not sell sushi cakes, they have tried making them in their test kitchen. “Unlike the traditional sushi that is rolled using a bamboo mat, sushi cake is layered using a cake mould to resemble a cake,” explains programming manager Jernnine Pang. “There is really no limitation to the height. It all depends on your creativity.”
Pang believes such a novel concept as cakes made out of sushi could become a hit in Singapore. “It could be since we have very discerning consumers in Singapore who are always looking out for novice stuff,” she says. “Sushi cakes makes great centerpieces for party.” Naturally, it also goes well with other Japanese food.
It could also be the safer — not to mention wholesome — alternative to that American invention, the Naked Sushi, where a naked woman is the centerpiece. She lies on a table and a selection of sushi, sashimi and maki rolls are laid out on top of her body. If you saw Sex And The City The Movie, you more or less get the idea.
According to Pang, California-Asia Sushi Academy would even consider conducting sushi cake-making workshops if there is such a demand. Until then, we’d just have to satisfy ourselves with decorative bento boxes…
