Sandy prepares a sheep-faced cupcake
Although it targets children, adults are welcome to join the class, but only if you’re an inexperienced baker like myself (and I enjoyed it tremendously), or you might get bored while the entire class goes crazy designing cupcakes using beginner-level ingredients and techniques.
The course costs $50, and each participant is handed five basic buttercupcakes and ready-to-apply icing. Creativity and a pair of steady hands is all that’s needed. And as I came to realise during the class, I lacked both.

My prettiest cupcake |
Taking out the materials required for this class from my bag and laying them out in front of me brought me back to art class in primary school, and I got really excited waiting for the instructions.
Sandy Goh, who carries a certification from Wilton, a leading cake decorating school in USA, was our instructor for the day. She began by talking about the ingredients and sharing tips about the butter cream icing for decorating the Easter cupcakes. As we weren’t going to practice serious piping methods for flower decorations, thin consistency icing was used for the class.

After a quick demonstration by Sandy on the right way to ice the cupcake, she showed the class how to make rabbit- and sheep-faced cupcakes. With simple techniques like marshmallow shaping and painting, the class was able to design a couple of cute cupcakes. |

| The other three cupcakes were for freestyle decorating, which made me pretty nervous as I have never decorated or baked cupcakes in my life. Presented with M&M’s, marshmallows in different sizes, chocolate rice, food colouring, decorating gels, and Eastericing images, I was determined to make cupcakes which at least looked edible. |

The one-and-a-half-hour class passed swiftly, and I managed to come up with cute looking cupcakes by constantly peeping at my classmates’ designs and morphing their ideas onto my defenseless cupcakes
After all that decorating fluff, it came down to eating it. Although most cake decorators don’t take a liking to sugaryicings, my self-made cupcakes tasted pretty good! Besides the artificial tasting coloured gel, it made a pretty enjoyable cupcake. |
