4 easy ways to do it...

ASK any Parrot owner this, and they will tell you that they wished their parrots would talk or talk more. Parrots are fascinating creatures whose ability to imitate human gestures and sounds is remarkable.

More than that, is their spectacular capacity to learn. Teaching your parrot to speak will also be a good avenue for it to de-stress, keeping in mind the fact that parrots are caged pets.Remember the old saying, “A child, who is never required to do what he cannot do, never does what he can do.” So here are some pointers for all you new parrot owners.

1. Verbal Repetition
Firstly, write out a list of words you would like your parrot to learn. Start with the easy ones first, then move on to phrases once it has mastered single words. Words like “hello”, “goodnight”, “bye”, “thanks” are good words to begin with. The next step would naturally be to put these words into practice. Cultivate the habit of always greeting your parrot for a start. Every time you step through the door from work, say “hello” to your parrot. At night before retiring for bed, say “goodnight”. You get the picture.

Hey.. we need the mic so that everyone can hear me!!!

2. Cassette Recorders
Many owners of well-versed parrots swear by cassette recorders. Record a certain word/phrase on yourrecorder and leave it to play back several times a day in front on your parrot. In a desperate attempt to teach their parrots to speak, don’t make the mistake some owners make of cornering their parrots with an overload of information. This can lead to unnecessary distress, and you end up with a very sad and unhealthy parrot.Phase learning sessions for your parrot systematically. Do not leave the cassette recorder to play back over and over again all day long.
3. Reward System
When your parrot speaks a new word/phrase for the first time, give it something special to eat, a treat perhaps. Make this reward immediate, so your parrot is able to make the direct connection with its ability to speak something new, to the treat.

4. Training tapes
Whilst this is a slightly more costly avenue to teach your parrot to speak, there are “professional” training tapes available in the market. Methodologies of teaching parrots to speak have been a venture that has been sought for years on end. Of course, there is no easy solution to this as all parrots learn at different rates and respond differently to the approach of their owners.

No two parrots are the same. Any parrot owner will tell you that the best way to teach your parrot to speak would definitely to spend time with it and trying to identify the patterns in its learning style over time. At last, nothing beats the feeling of stepping home each day to the cheerful greeting of “hello!” Relatives, friends and guests will be amazed and thoroughly entertained by your little feathered pet.

Of course, above everything, the satisfaction you gain from knowing you helped your parrot hone its true abilities is irreplaceable.
