Pet rabbit
Breathless...you're just too cute!

So you’ve decided to purchase a rabbit; but just how much do you know about these furry creatures? Rabbits are among the most delicate and sensitive of household pets around. It’s helpful to know a little bit about their history and the kinds available around. Just like it is with hamsters, dogs, cats and terrapins, the needs and living conditions of rabbits differs.

Rabbits, with the inclusion of hares, originate from the Western Hemisphere. It is said that rabbits were first made into household pets by French monks. These monks also experimented with the inter-breeding of rabbits and from there, produced various cross-breeds which resulted in interesting fur patterns and colours like the kinds present in modern day rabbits. Today’s predominant rabbit breeds among domesticated ones include the Angora, Argente, Beveren and Dutch Rabbit.

The good thing about owning a rabbit as a household pet would of course be its pros – the fact that rabbits live relatively long lives (an average of 7 years to about 15 years depending on its size). Bunnies are also relatively healthy creatures which don’t fall sick easily as long as they live on a proper diet and in an appropriate environment. Like most other pets though, rabbits require vaccinations which can be arranged very easily at the vet.

A proper diet for a rabbit would be raw carrots and most other forms of vegetables as long as they’re crunchy. Fresh water should be provided at all times as well as occasional treats in the form of vitamin-enriched biscuits. Rabbits enjoy their freedom and moving around, and are especially active at night. However, most owners tend to cage their rabbits up. This is perfectly fine as long as every now and then, you allow your rabbit his/her personal space to hop around under your supervision. A rabbit’s cage should be appropriately floored with a litter bed. Since rabbits enjoy chewing, it will be a good idea to purchase some items such as wood chewable.

It is especially crucial to groom (i.e. brush) your rabbit’s fur everyday as failure to do this will result in matted clumps of fur which are extremely difficult to get rid of. It is also important to note that rabbits have very thin skin and thus, sensitivity should be exercised when brushing them. In many instances, rabbits have their skin torn because of rough handling while grooming.

Rabbits often get cold easily and thus it would be a good idea to include soft toys and old towels, etc. in the cage. On a final note, rabbits are pretty docile and fun-loving animals which make really good home pets, especially in homes with children. While too much handling isn’t often encouraged, it’s perfectly fine to caress your rabbit and play with it while letting it out every now and then.
