going mad over artist's products
REMEMBER last year, how you stressed out over picking “sincere” Christmas gifts on the weekend before the celebration party? No one feels good giving or receiving some generic gift, so this year go and do it right. How? By starting your Christmas shopping early: this weekend at the Red Dot Museum, where the group called Market of Artists And Designers (MAAD) is selling wares.
Expect to see unique gifts made by Singapore’s local artists and designers.
Besides lending your support to these creative spirits, you can be assured that your gift will be one of a kind.
With 40 stalls brimming with creative handmade products, there will be enough choices for all friends and family with particular tastes. “Expect to see very limited editions of t-shirts, accessories, furniture, plush toys, and books,” promises MAAD organiser Shannon Ong.
Christmas shopping also brings me back to those SPCA messages on how we should never give pets as gifts lest the receiving party is not willing to take responsibility for it. However, this year you can! At MAAD, you would be able to customise your own pet rock and take home a one of a kind gift for the more imaginative friends.

“The pet rock project is part of MAAD’s ten-bucks-therapy project, people can come to chill out and unleash their creative side. It’s a project to encourage the public to experiment with art,” Shannon explains.
Gifts aside, why not get something for you, of you? Singapore’s Organisation of Illustrators Council is holding a portrait day on Saturday, so you can get your pretty face drawn, sketched, painted, or mutated.
As you sit and pose, at least 10 illustrators would start drawing you, and you can buy your favourite pieces out of the lot at $8 each.
You can be certain this event will not be your garden-variety buy-and-sell flea market. Bask in the whole arty atmosphere with their tea party, vinyl Christmas tunes, and do mingle with all the free spirited artists there, too. Think Andy Warhol’s factory without the alcohol, mayhem, and delusional souls.
This monthly gathering of artistic entrepreneurs is held at the Red Dot Museum every first weekend of the month. Check out MAAD’s listing for more information.
