Ginette Chittick

Fashion designer, band singer, and DJ Ginette says she’s tried many things, ‘ but would never dare say I have accomplished them.’

BEST known for fronting the local indie band Astreal, Ginette Chittick has much more up her creative pockets. She also lectures communication design at LASALLE College of the Arts, is co-owner of fashion label FrüFrü & Tigerlily, and resident DJ at Home Club. Just who is this 30-year-old pint pint-sized rocker?

Tell us a little background on your family.
I come from a civil engineering family that had a hand in laying the foundation for the Changi Airport back in those days. My maternal grandfather was a submarine designer for the British Navy, and he received a medal from the Queen just shortly before his death.

What qualities do you admire most in a woman?
Well, there are two: The women I look up to have an ability to love in the harshest of situations. It could be giving love or time to another human being, animals, or even the environment, or a cause they hold dear to their hearts. I also admire fearlessness in a woman.

What qualities should Singaporean men brush up on?
I think Singaporean men in general could be more sensitive towards the feelings of others. There are, of course, the select few who have their sensitivity chip well installed.

How important are your looks to you?
I will not pretend it is not important to me. "It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible," says Oscar Wilde

How much “me-time” do you give yourself every week?
I've been so busy this year it's crazy! I try to give myself “me-time” every Sunday and a weeknight, and that's definitely inadequate!

What's the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is when I see my work to fruition. When a collection at FrüFrü & Tigerlily is completed and sold successfully, or when a show I play at is well received. I also love my workmates at LASALLE; they're a great bunch!

What's the unhealthiest thing you do?
I’m an instant noodle addict. I also have an unhealthy addiction to Tabasco hot sauce. It goes into everything I eat, including instant noodles.

What would you do if you had an impromptu day off?
Rot on the couch watching Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette all day.

What is your vision of an ideal life?
To live in a glass house perched on a tree by a snow-capped mountainside with my boyfriend. In my ideal life, I would also have successfully saved all animals from the evil clutches of mankind.

When would you consider yourself as accomplished?
I’m still far from it. I have many more things to accomplish. I would say, I've tried many things, but would never dare say I have accomplished them.

What are your views on motherhood?
I would love to have children...some day. But I'm really not ready yet. Being a parent takes a lot of preparation and planning. Every little thing you do or say will have consequences and repercussions on your child. It's some heavy stuff. And I want to make sure I stop being selfish before I decide to have a child. There are too many selfish parents out there.

How in control of your finances are you?
I could do better, but I'm not in debt. I have investments and proper insurances, so I think I'm doing okay. I will slowly build my financial portfolio; well, that's the plan at least.

What's number 1 on your personal to do list right now?
I have a holiday to Glasgow lined up for the winter, and I plan to have a blast!

What’s your typical weekend like?
I spin at Home Club on Friday nights; so Saturday afternoons are usually spent lazing about with my boyfriend, doing my laundry or watching some DVDs, and then I'll usually have a nice dinner, watch a movie or party with the girls. On Sundays, I try to stay home to finish my projects such as the visuals or fashion stuff, read a book or meet up with my (yes) book club.

If you had a choice, how would your ideal weekend be?
Ideally, it would be on spent on a beach resort in Seychelles or Mauritius in a hut out on the sea with my boyfriend, food served to us, massages, and spas. Ooooh yes!
