Relive The ‘80s At Zouk
This Friday, JUICE turns 9 with an ‘80s-themed party. What to wear? Go over the top. We’ll show you how.
By Mavis Ang Updated on 7th November 2007

PARTY with Singapore’s scenesters at Zouk on 9th November as local street magazine JUICE celebrates its ninth birthday with an electro-themed party. Named "Robo Electro", JUICE’s birthday bash will bring back all things hip and in from the '80s to the early '90s. Getting to party with the hip crowd requires some underground knowledge, and if you haven’t been a loyal reader of JUICE, you might not have heard the term new rave before.

Sure, it’s an '80s themed party, but fashion evolves, so don’t be misled into going for the bad hair spray and coats with big shoulder pads look. Instead, go new rave. It’s the term for a whole new underground culture inspired by fashion and music from the '80s. So what do new ravers wear to electro parties like this one on Friday? Here are 8 simple items to mix and match. Couple it with the right attitude, and you’d be one of the hippest hipster in town.

Anything neon
Colour is fundamental in dressing electro, so just think My Chemical Romance, but way over at the other end of the scale. We’re talking about donning clothes so bright you have to put on sunglasses when you look down at your shoes.

Coloured jeans
A hot favourite among many youngsters prowling the streets of Orchard Road, coloured jeans are amazingly popular because it makes an excellent centerpiece of any outfit. Just by adding a brilliant dash of colour to your legs makes you look bright, happy, and cheerful, even if the rest of your outfit is dull.

Oversized, off shoulder tops
Flattering for ladies all shapes and sizes, these roomy tops can pass off as cute mini dresses, or pair off perfectly with a pair of shocking tights as well. That is why we love them so much! They hide arms and bellies, and are awfully comfortable.

Coloured leggings and tights
Whether or not it’s paired with any long top, plain or colourful, tights are essential this season. Coloured tights and leggings are all over the runways and fashion spreads, so go the extra mile and put on rainbow coloured ones with all sorts of prints and designs.

Hoodies
Notice how sunglasses make people look cooler and more chiseled than they actually are? Hoodies do the same because they hide a certain part of your face, and make you look cooler and more mysterious. Perfect for guys, a hoody is a typical street wear item, which is what new rave is all about.Note: No baggy, hip hop hoodies please! Only fitting, colourful ones.

Pop-coloured Nike Dunks
Remember those limited edition Dunks which you’ve collected some years back, but thought were too garish to wear them out in daylight? Pair these sneakers up with those hoodies, and you will be perfectly clad for this party.

Bright eye make up, yes, for guys too

Splash the glitter, dayglo, eye shadow, and everything else non-black in your makeup pouch onto your eyes. Go as flamboyantly bright as you can. Your friends won’t have trouble trying to spot you in the middle of the dance floor in the dark and misty club anymore!

Accesorise with waist pouches and visors
For the seriously '80s ones, accesorise with some translucent pink visors and an outdated waist pouch for maximum effect. The right accessories can easily make your normal top and jeans outfit look electro.

Loud T-shirts which scream with colour clashes (see Topman’s collection)
As for guys who aren’t daring enough to do all those above, just settle for a striking shirt with a crazy design. People can only see you waist up in clubs anyways, so make the most of it.

Although no one would dress like a light stick with neon clothing from head to toe, don’t let the “Is this too much?” mentality restrict you. It’s all about being flashy, gaudy, and happy! .
